Learn how the Tachometer works

A tachometer is a device designed to measure the rotational speed of various parts in engines and other mechanisms. It calculates revolutions per minute (RPM). The tachometer also measures and monitors load limits, in order to decrease or increase RPM so that the engine or mechanism runs within its optimal parameters.

Who invented the Tachometer, and when?

The tachometer was invented by the German engineer Dietrich Uhlhorn in 1817. His invention was a special device that measured centrifugal force. From 1840 on, this device has been used in railway locomotives, and later in cars and all manner of vehicular transport.

Use

The tachometer is used in mechanisms where it is necessary to accurately track RPM to avoid the negative consequences of overloads. Savvy motorists use tachometers to know when to shift gears (in cars with manual transmissions) and to control the load on the engine, thereby increasing the operating life of their vehicles.

What the Tachometer consists of and how it works

The Tachometer 3D puzzle from UGEARS' STEM Lab collection is a fully operational DIY wooden model of a tachometer, ready for you to assemble. When the handle is rotated, movement is transmitted through a reducer, increasing the RPM and displacing twin weights in the centrifugal unit. The higher the RPM, the more centrifugal force separates the weights, shifting a movable axle with flywheel. A pointer mechanism (dial) is fixed to the axle; the more the axle shifts (higher RPM), the more the dial arrow deflects, indicating higher speed rotation.

Connect the Tachometer to the Variator, creating a new mechanism

The Variator-Tachometer system demonstrates the direct relationship between the transmission ratio of a gearbox, and rotational speed.

When the handle of the Variator is rotated, the movement is transmitted through the reducer to the cone-shaped driving pulley. The rotation of the first cone is then transmitted through the belt to the other cone, which is the driven pulley. When the pedal attached to the housing is pressed, it shifts the fork holding the belt, thereby changing the rotational speed of the driven pulley. When the Tachometer is attached to the Variator, the changing rotational speed of the driven pulley of the Variator is transmitted to the Tachometer's reducer. This in turn will increase or decrease the centrifugal force on the weights, shifting the axle with flywheel. Shifting the axle deflects the indicator on the dial toward a higher or lower value. In this way, changes to the transmission ratio in the Variator will be seen to increase or decrease the RPM of the attached Tachometer.

Ugears goes romantically medieval and invites you to become a siegecraft expert with its new exciting model – Archballista and Tower. Inspired by the best examples of ancient artillery, legendary battles of the past re-enacted in films, books, and games, this model provides a new spin on the classic war machine to test you great conqueror’s skill. Ugears’ new model consists of two parts: the siege machine itself and the mechanical tower. Both units are moveable and have plenty of articulated details. The Ballista has two modules: the firing unit and the base. The base has adjustable legs stabilising the machine during firing. The firing unit – or the actual ballista – shoots wood bolts. The firing mechanism can shoot up to three bolts in a round. Traverse and elevation mechanism enables the ballista to be set at the required angle in horizontal and vertical planes to ensure the best aim. The lever of the winding mechanism can be found on the right side of the model’s body. The same lever works as a trigger that launches your bolt at the target when the aiming is set. The firing module can be detached from the base and mounted on the top of the Tower – the second part of the Ballista/Tower model. The weapon created to demolish defence fortifications has been in use since antiquity. However, Ugears’ two-parts model refers to the medieval period which is clearly seen from its design, especially, the detail of the Tower. Decorated with delicate ornaments a classic ivy-cloaked castle tower with a heraldic gryphon/dragon on a coat of arms hides a few interesting constructional features: it is a Ugears model, which means that it cannot possibly be a static piece of wood. The gear on the side of the tower is a part of the mechanism that raises the second level revealing the spiral staircase and interior structure. The tower is completely extended when you can see the whole shield with a dragon that is set parallel to the tower’s wall. Inspired by the 1902 State Landau, the intricate and elegant Carriage is drawn by four graceful horses. DIY wooden puzzle Random Generator, as you might have guessed from its name, is a device that generates random numbers and provides different random results based on probability theory. How it does this is exactly what the Ugears STEM model will demonstrate. The main element of the 3D puzzle Random Generator’s design is a cube with an octahedron inside it that in its turn contains a metal ball to provide weight. This construction is powered by a rack-and-gear drive initiated manually and providing energy through a driven gear that rotates a three-axle gear.
